What a better way to entertain than hosting a charming country picnic on a warm spring day, enjoying nature’s bounty in the great outdoors!!
Our local Butcher’s Café in Patumahoe (owned by one of our own alumni and self-confessed foodie, Rachel Capon) recently catered lunch for a group of 80 New Zealand Young Farmers at the home of Secret Garden owners, Tamsin and Pete Wilson.
Those that attended were delighted at the setting – at the forefront of the homestead, under an oak tree nestled bright-coloured blankets and plumpy cushions scattered around plaid tablecloths and Ajars filled with flowers.
In typical Butcher’s Café style, the food fare was an eye-watering array of soul food deliciousness at its best! Assembled on vintage trestles were Mediterranean salads decorated with flowers and sprinklings of pomegranate on china, bursting baskets of fresh fruits, wooden boards boasting fresh still-warm breads with butter curls, platters of elegant sliced meats, islands of assorted cheese mounds surrounded by wafer crackers and relish pottles, strawberries encased in dark chocolate, an assortment of delicious old-fashion slices, and a decanter of homemade minty lemonade.
In the past, guests may have had accepted this buffet dished on the unfortunate plastic plate and cutlery. However, this feast was served with a distinct difference. Guests were invited to help themselves using compostable fibre bowls and tableware from Punchbowl Packaging’s range of bagasse products. “We think when serving food that requires disposable tableware, our compostable range is not only the greenest option but is also a more user-friendly shape for casual dining” says Punchbowl Packaging’s Sales and Business Manager, Tunde Lovestyan. “Compostable items such as containers and plates are extremely kind to the environment and have become increasingly popular as public demands alternative to less plastic.”
And the picnic guests agree – here are few of their comments;
“…brilliant – guiltless plates, about time!”
“…the ginger slice was too good to waste – this plate has its own lid, so I have a few goodies to takeaway. Excellent invention…”
“…plastic plates would have spoiled a great lunch. These bowls felt organic and healthy…”'
