When we think of solutions that set us up for a sustainable future, we believe a holistic view needs to be considered: packaging must serve its function and meet current needs, whilst providing a lower environmental impact, compared to existing or conventional packaging. This extends beyond the materials used; it must also address things such as our community requirements, pricing and supply chain demands, brand impacts, and how the business operates in its day-to-day practices to meet these needs.
With packaging being one of the top ten concerns New Zealanders have when it comes to sustainability, consumer behaviour has been a key driver of Punchbowl Packaging’s move to more sustainable solutions. With climate change reports seemingly being released on a conveyor belt over the past few years, more and more customers are asking businesses like ours about their role in this movement. Customers want to align themselves with, and be part of the solution to, sustainability. This has encouraged us to think outside the box when it comes to creating solutions that work with us, not against us.
At Punchbowl Packaging, because a large quantity of the products we pack are fresh produce, it was imperative that the product integrity remained high and that any brand impact was a positive one. We also didn’t take sustainable packaging at face value; it was important to us that we went above and beyond to ensure any naturally available resources we used were certified as suitable for recycling and composting, so that our customers could purchase with peace of mind, knowing that they truly were being part of the solution.
